The score – what’s it all about?

May 12th, 2010

A couple of years ago I proclaimed that the score wasn’t important to me. It was merely an aid for memorizing. Sound was everything – paper was nothing.
During these last couple of years I have focused on working closely with the performers, and I have developed the pieces as sound without the assistance of traditional musical notation.
I still kind of agree with my old claims, sound is everything, but I now have to admit that there are results and benefits that can be more easily produced with properly notated scores than without them. What really opened my eyes to these benefits was the incomplete and scarce documentation from one of my finished projects; the performance instruction were useless for someone who hadn’t been a part of the process.
So, I made a tough decision: To start making “real” scores again.

I really hate Finale, and kind of hate Sibelius – these programs kills my interest in scores completely. It took me several weeks of testing and discarding, but I have now finally found my way to score; my score program is Indesign.
‘Cause nobody’s like that is my first score done in Indesign. It is an important step for me. This piece is now possible to perform for any pianist who would be interested, and not only for the commissioner – Ellen Ugelvik.
