The score – what’s it all about?

A couple of years ago I proclaimed that the score wasn’t important to me. It was merely an aid for memorizing. Sound was everything – paper was nothing.
During these last couple of years I have focused on working closely with the performers, and I have developed the pieces as sound without the assistance of traditional musical notation.
I still kind of agree with my old claims, sound is everything, but I now have to admit that there are results and benefits that can be more easily produced with properly notated scores than without them. What really opened my eyes to these benefits was the incomplete and scarce documentation from one of my finished projects; the performance instruction were useless for someone who hadn’t been a part of the process.
